The Caulfield Cup (2400m) picture will get a lot clearer on Tuesday, when Lloyd Williams decides how many starters he’ll have in the Group 1 contest.
Williams will have up to four starters in the $2.5 million race, depending on what his plans are for Herbert Power Stakes winner Sea Moon, and last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon, who was scratched from Saturday’s Caulfield Stakes due to an elevated temperature.
”We could have up to four runners and that would include Sea Moon and Green Moon but we’ve got to think about things. Dad [Lloyd Williams] has never won the Caulfield Cup, I think he’s run a few seconds in the race but he’s never won it,” stable representative Nick Williams told Fairfax Media.
”We will have a good look at things. We’ve got until Tuesday to make up our minds but there is a realistic chance of us having a strong hand in the race.”
Team Williams already has Fawkner as a confirmed Caulfield Cup runner, while Masked Marvel and Metrop winner Seville are unlikely starters.
If Sea Moon and Green Moon both bypass the Caulfield Cup, weights will be raised by 1.5 kilos. If one or both run, weights will remain the same.
