Posted on May 5th, 2014 by Red Belly Sports

California Chrome has taken out the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby, dominating his rivals at Churchill Downs.

Trained by 77-year-old Art Sherman and ridden by Victor Espinoza, California Chrome won by 1 ¾ lengths eased down, with Commanding Curve and Danza filling the minor placings.

California Chrome netted connections $1.62 million for the win, after starting a solid favourite.

The prizemoney for the Kentucky Derby now pales in comparison to what’s on offer during The Championships in Sydney, including $2.47 million for the winner of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and $1.8 million on offer for the winner of the Doncaster Mile.
