Trainer Jason Warren has been charged by Racing Victoria stewards over the Baron Archer betting scandal, with suspended jockey Danny Nikolic now linked to the saga.
Warren has been charged with failing to notify stewards that Baron Archer had undergone throat surgery, prior to his first-up run at Echuca on March 8th.
He also faces the charge of ‘providing false or misleading evidence’ to stewards who were looking into the suspicious betting patterns surrounding the race.
RV stewards allege Warren intentionally failed to report that Baron Archer underwent the throat operation late last year.
Baron Archer jumped favourite but was beaten, finishing third in the five horse field.
News Corp reports that a Betfair account financed by Nikolic and operated by his partner Tania Hyett placed a significant ‘Lay’ bet on Baron Archer (i.e. backed the horse to lose) in the race.
Much of the $260,000 wagered on the race on Betfair was in the form of ‘Lay’ bets on Baron Archer.
