Gerald Ryan’s gun colt Rubick is heading to the spelling paddock, and will miss the $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill in April.
Rubick finished fourth behind Earthquake in Saturday’s Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield, the race which his owners always indicated would be the son of Encosta De Lago’s Grand Final.
The owners insist Rubick pulled up well from the run, but instead of pressing on to the Slipper, the 2-year-old will be spelled with the spring carnival in mind.
“Rubick has shown us signs that a spell is the best thing for him after two pressure runs at Caulfield. He is as sound as a bell,” part-owner David Raphael posted on Twitter on Tuesday.
Rubick went into the Blue Diamond as race favourite after two impressive victories, but proved no match for Earthquake.
