Long-time favourite Puissance De Lune is out of the $6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m), after pulling up sore from Saturday’s Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

Racing Victoria stewards reported that the imported stallion pulled up lame in the off-foreleg, and part-owner Gerry Ryan has confirmed he won’t be starting the two-mile stamina test.

Gai Waterhouse’s stable star Fiorente, who finished third behind Shamus Award and Happy Trails in the Cox Plate, is outright favourite for the Cup at $6.60 on Betfair, ahead of Mount Athos ($10) and Dandino ($11.50).

Beaten Caulfield Cup favourite Hawkspur is on the sixth line of betting at $16, behind imports Varema ($15) and Voleuse De Coeurs ($15.50).
