Regally-bred filly Lady Sharapova could well measure up to better quality races over the spring, after breaking through for her first win at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Trained by the Hawkes team, the $800,000 daughter of Fastnet Rock was too strong for another expensive yearling purchase, the $675,000 filly Twirl over 1200m.
Red Belly’s form expert Ed Kennett wasn’t surprised by the performance of Lady Sharapova, providing the following comment for members on our ratings sheet:
Lady Sharapova (race plates first time) we haven’t seen the best of this one yet.
Was very good at Flemington back in February then ran real well (on Heavy) in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes, beaten 3 lengths by the smarties like Bring Me The Maid etc.
Trialled very nicely at Rosehill over 900m 15 days ago. Will hit the line well but there is always the question left unanswered…is it a better 1400m horse?
Our ratings had Twirl on top on the strength of her performance in black type races last preparation, and her effort carrying 58.5 kilos was full of merit.
It was certainly no surprise to see Lady Sharapova win the way she did and it will be interesting to see where the Hawkes team decide to go with her in coming weeks.
